The researcher Nicolas Lippolis, founder of the Center for Energy, Finance and Development (CEFD), was in Salzburg, Austria, in June to participate in the second round of the Pathways to Prosperity Post-Fossil Fuels dialogue.
The PPFF project, a collaborative effort by Salzburg Global, Climate Strategies, the Stanley Center for Peace and Security, and the Windward Fund, focuses on enabling just energy transitions in fossil fuel-dependent economies, a crucial step towards a sustainable future.
Dr. Lippolis, among the diverse group of policymakers, researchers, and civil society leaders, made a significant contribution to the dialogue. He presented the case of Brazil, shedding light on how fossil fuel-producing countries can chart equitable and climate-compatible development pathways.
The sessions built on insights from the first round and delved into topics such as:
- Aligning transitions away from fossil fuels with inclusive economic transformation;
- Modeling socioeconomic impacts more rigorously;
- Elevating a diverse range of voices in global transition debates.
Brazil has a complex role to play in this conversation, addressing oil sector governance, renewable energy policy, and the challenges of a just transition, as well as linking oil revenues more comprehensively to investments in sustainable economic transformation.
